How Highlights Work

Any shade of hair can be complemented with highlights. Even darker shades of brown and black can be lifted with caramel, lighter browns, and reds. When choosing the color for your highlights, your stylist will take your natural hair color and skin tone into consideration. For example, you may know you want blonde highlights, but your stylist will help you choose a hue that offers the right level of warmth for your natural tones.

Applying highlights is a work of art—literally! Your stylist will paint on color to different sections of hair and then wrap those sections in foil for processing. Typically, highlights are applied from the root down, so you will have the most color along the crown of your head. However, if you want a lower maintenance cut and color, your stylist may guide you toward “lived-in” highlights that allow your natural color to grow out without an obvious gap in your roots. The length of your appointment will depend on the exact color technique you choose as well as the level of lightening you’re hoping to achieve, but you will probably need to be at the salon for at least two hours.
